I know I already posted for this theme, but while sorting photos I came across this image that I had to share. Besides that, it’s not my fault that the theme for the next week’s challenge was late appearing and I was thrown off schedule! I was fortunate to see Whirling Dervishes perform in the Galata Mevlevihane (Mevlevi Lodge) in 2005. The building is incredible, and it was a mesmerizing experience. Traditionally all the robes were white and worn by men, but in this presentation, women take part and they wear colored robes. So beautiful.

Whirling Dervishes

The followers of Rumi are known as the Whirling Dervishes due to their famous practice of whirling as a form of dhikr (remembrance of God.) You do not have to share their beliefs to appreciate the beauty of the performance.

  1. This is an awesome photo! The area where you are reminds me of a replica of Shakespear’s Globe Theatre where I was able to see Macbeth once! It was an amazing experience and your photo just brought all that back! Wow! Thank you 😀

    1. Thanks. You have to see it to truly appreciate the meditative quality of the movement. The spinning goes on and on and on! And there is live music from some very interesting instruments. Nothing to book for a party, but interesting.
